X DM Generator (Fake Chat Mockup)

X's private messages moved into Chat (the encrypted successor to DMs) in 2025 and 2026, but the screen still looks like a messaging app: their messages on the left in gray, yours on the right in blue. Build one here for an app demo, a storyboard or a lesson.

How do I build a chat mockup?

Name the person you're chatting with, then add messages from "them" (left) and "you" (right) and edit the text and times.

  1. Fill in Chat partner: display name, username, checkmark and photo or photo color.
  2. In Messages, edit the sample bubbles or add new ones with the two buttons.
  3. Change who sent a message with the From menu. Consecutive messages from the same side are grouped, and only the last one in a group gets the tail corner and time.
  4. Turn on "Seen" to show that your last message was read.
  5. Download at 1x, 2x or 3x of a 390-pixel phone width.

What do people use DM mockups for?

App and product demos, comics and storyboards, social media training and scam-awareness lessons.

Customer service teams use them to script example conversations. Security trainers rebuild the shape of a phishing DM ("your account will be suspended, verify here") with fictional names to show staff what to look for. Writers use chat screenshots in fiction. All of those work with made-up people.

Why does the label matter more for messages?

Because private messages can't be checked: there's no public post anyone can look up to prove a screenshot is fake.

A fake public post can be debunked by searching the account. A fake DM can't, which is why fabricated DM screenshots show up so often in harassment and extortion cases. The label stays on until you confirm the chat is fictional or a mockup; see the responsible use guide for the reasoning.

Questions people ask

Is this what X Chat looks like in 2026?

It follows the common layout of X's messaging screen: partner name and photo at the top, incoming bubbles on the left, your messages on the right in X blue, times under message groups and a composer at the bottom. Exact styling differs between the X app, the web and the separate XChat app.

Can I add photos to the chat?

Yes. Each message can carry a photo from your device, shown above its text bubble. Nothing is uploaded.

Can I make a chat that looks like it came from a real person?

Please don't. Fake private messages are a classic tool for harassment and scams, and sharing one as real can be defamation. Use fictional names, and keep the MOCKUP label unless the chat is obviously yours or obviously fictional.
