Emoji on X: How They Look, Count and Work

Short answer

On X most emoji count as two characters toward the 280 limit, display in X's own flat style on the web, and work in posts, names and bios; use them to add tone, not to replace words.

Key takeaways

  • One emoji counts as 2, including skin-tone and family sequences.
  • X's web emoji style differs from Apple's and Google's, so screenshots from phones look different.
  • Screen readers read emoji names aloud, so long emoji strings are hard to listen to.

Emoji are part of how people write on X. A few details about how X handles them help when you're writing posts, setting up a profile or making a mockup.

How do emoji count toward the limit?

Two characters each, whatever the sequence.

X's character counting (from its open-source twitter-text library) treats each emoji as weight 2. That includes emoji with skin tones (๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿฝ), gender variants, flags (๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ท) and family sequences (๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ง), which are made of several code points under the hood. Why does X's emoji look different from my phone's?

Every platform has its own emoji artwork; X's website uses flat, Twemoji-style images, while the iPhone app uses Apple's.

So a screenshot from an iPhone shows Apple emoji, one from Android shows Google's, and one from x.com in a desktop browser shows X's style. That's a useful clue when checking whether a screenshot came from where someone claims. Our generator uses your device's emoji, the same as a screenshot from your device.

Where can I use emoji?

In posts, display names, bios, DMs and hashtags with letters; not in usernames.

Place Emoji allowed?
Post text Yes
Display name Yes (up to 50 characters total)

How do I use emoji well?

One or two that add tone or replace a word, not a row at the end.

  • ๐Ÿงต at the start of a thread is a widely understood signal.
  • Emoji as bullet points work in long posts but not in every line.
  • Screen readers read each emoji's name, so "๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ" becomes "fire fire fire fire". Keep strings short.
  • Don't use emoji to replace key words; search won't find them.
